Most security doors require triplelocking in order to reach Australian safety requirements. In this article, we explore triplelocking in detail.
What is Triplelock?
In security screen doors, there are two main locking standards. The first is a single lock. This involves having a single lock on a door, usually located in the middle of the door on either the right or left-hand side to correspond with the existing door.
However, Australian security standards require security doors to have a triple lock system instead. Alongside a regular central lock, a triple lock system also has an internal system which connects to two additional locks, with one being above the central lock and the other being below the central lock, the 3 locks are controlled by the central locking mechanism.
This type of locking is more secure and harder for intruders to open.
What are Australian Standards?
The Australian market is quite strict when it comes to security standards. These standards include:
- Whether the door will be resistant to forced entry. For a door to pass this test, it must be resistant to a knife attack, an attack with strong physical force and a pull attack.
- The door must also be “jimmy” resistant, meaning the lock must be secure.
- Other security tests, all of which ensure that the material of the door has inherent strength and will maintain security under a variety of conditions.
- Alongside intruder standards, there are also understandable Australia-specific standards such as bushfire and fire adaptability.
What to Look Out For
Australian Standards require that any door installed as security must pass all standard tests. In most cases, this will involve the door being installed with a triple lock. If you are being offered a “security” door with a single lock, ask to see the test standard the door is being made to.
